Program Management and Live Data Center Infrastructure Upgrades

As part of an ongoing five-year relationship, e3i Engineers is providing data center and critical operations consulting as this professional service firm’s liaison between their real estate team, IT operations team, and third party facility operators. In this critical role, the e3i Engineers team provides reliability and risk reviews of operations, reviews capital as well as operational expenditures and provides designs to increase reliability and operational efficiencies.

Working closely with three different stake holders of a data center can be a challenging task. e3i Engineers not only provides engineering services in the role but also translates complex operational elements into easy-to-understand terms, procedures, and risk profiles.

e3i provided design engineering for a live UPS replacement and chiller upgrade with zero downtime. Two existing, 900kW rotary UPS units were replaced with modern, static UPS units. Distribution to the data center was designed with a systematic phasing approach that allowed for risk mitigation while upgrading PDUs and RPPs. The new UPS unit provided enough operational savings at their high efficiency and smaller heat profile to provide a payback of under 3 years while the chiller provided additional redundancy and energy savings.

e3i also provided a high efficiency computer room cooling design replacement for an operational 15,000 SF data center in Europe. The design included utilizing a pumped refrigerant CRAC system which had not been previously utilized in this area. The savings from the new design, CFD modeling and revised control system resulted in a 2.5-year payback.
